The Tuxedo No. 2 co*cktail is a sneaky riff on the classic gin martini that dates back to the early 1900s. It’s similar to a typical dry gin martini but introduces orange bitters, absinthe, and maraschino liqueur, creating a far more complex and balanced co*cktail.

Why I Love This co*cktail
The classic martini is made with gin and vermouthand garnished with an olive or lemon twist. A dirty martini introduces a splash of olive brine, adding saltiness. I’ve typically steered clear of gin martinis because I find them a little bland.
The Tuxedo No. 2 offers more complex herbal and citrus notes and a slightly sweeter profile thanks to the addition of maraschino liqueur. The ingredients complement the botanicals in gin better than other variations. If you’re a gin lover, it’s something you need to try!

Ingredients
- Gin:look for a classic dry gin. I like Plymouth Gin or Aviation Gin.
- Maraschino liqueur:a clear, sweet liqueur with a distinctive cherry flavor. It is made from Marasca cherries. Luxardo is my favorite brand. Here are more co*cktails you can make with maraschino liqueur.
- Dry vermouth: I prefer Dolin. Martini & Rossi is another easy-to-find option.
- Orange bitters: orange bitters add essential citrus. Look for Scrappy’s or Fee Brothers. Don’t skip this ingredient!
- Absinthe:Absinthe is notmandatorybut it does enhance the co*cktail flavor, adding additional anise flavor. Any Absinthe you can find should do the trick. A bottle will last years.
- Lemon peel:lemon peel adds a burst of citrus flavor and aroma.

How to Make a Tuxedo No. 2
Step 1.
Pour a cap full of absinthe into a chilled coupe glass. Twirl to coat the inside of the glass and discard the excess.
Step 2.
Combine all ingredients (except lemon) in a co*cktail shaker with plenty of ice. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds and strain into the coupe glass.
Step 3.
Point the outer part of a lemon peel (non-pith side) towards the top of the drink and gently squeeze the edges so the oils spray out over the top of the co*cktail. If done properly, you can see an oily film floating on the surface of your co*cktail.
Expert TIps
- The lemon peel is not only a garnish, but a critical element of the drink. The oils add an important aroma that adds complexity and freshness.
- Freeze your coupe glasses. This helps keep your drink cooler for longer. You can alternatively chill your glass down with ice water before filling.
- Shake your stir your martini. It’s a matter of preference. if you shake it, be sure to double strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove tiny ice chips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this with vodka?
You can if you’d like, but it’s smoother with gin in my opinion. If you do, let me know what you think.
What is a gin martini made of?
The classic gin martini is made with gin and dry vermouth and sometimes orange bitters. Popular garnishes include either an olive or lemon twist for a more citrus-forward variation.
How long does Dry vermouth last?
Dry vermouth is a fortified wine, meaning once it’s open it begins to oxidize. Once open, store it in the fridge and it should stay fresh enough for co*cktails for about 2 months.
